Atherosclerosis:
How a stroke gets its start

Atherosclerosis
In atherosclerosis, cholesterol carried in the blood builds up fatty deposits (plaques) in the artery lining, causing narrowing of the artery over time that can lead to blockage. Plaque formation and artery narrowing take place over a period of years -- but the process begins with the formation of a fatty streak that can appear as early as adolescence.
