What is Schizophrenia?

Associated Problems
Schizophrenia is a life-threatening disease. For instance, the mood disturbances and isolation, as well as symptoms, characteristic of schizophrenia cause about 10% of patients (especially younger males) to commit suicide, and lead many more to seriously harm themselves. Emotional pain can lead schizophrenics to "self-medicate" their symptoms, resulting in high rates of alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking. For these and other reasons, schizophrenics are much more likely than most to wind up in the hospital, on the streets, or in jail.
