How Brain Cells Function
Communication between brain cells, or neurons, occurs as electrical impulses travel down the neuron and trigger the release of chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurons are separated by a tiny space called a synapse and rely on neurotransmitters to bridge that gap.

As the neurotransmitters flood the synapse, they attach to the next neuron and set off a new nerve impulse, a process that continues domino-like until the message reaches its target site in the body.
