The normal brainHow Brain Cells FunctionCommunication between brain cells, or neurons, occurs as electrical impulses travel down the neuron and trigger the release of chemicals called neurotransmitters. Neurons are separated by a tiny space called a synapse and rely on neurotransmitters to bridge that gap. As the neurotransmitters flood the synapse, they attach to the next neuron and set off a new nerve impulse, a process that continues domino-like until the message reaches its target site in the body. | |
