Allergic ResponseHow the Body ReactsExposure to an allergen activates the release of special cells in the body called tissue mast cells. These mast cells carry certain antibodies called IgE, which are immune substances specific to a particular allergen. The IgE antibodies then bind to the allergen, causing the mast cells to release the chemical histamine. It is the histamine that sets off a chain of chemical reactions that cause the lining of the nose to swell, an increase in mucus secretion, and other allergy symptoms.
