What is Osteoporosis?

Symptoms of Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is sometimes called a silent disease because it usually causes no symptoms for a long time. In fact, a fracture may be the first sign of osteoporosis that has silently reached an advanced stage. It's believed that more than 23 million American women over age 50 have a high risk of osteoporosis fractures.

Occasionally, however, less advanced osteoporosis may signal its presence with muscle or bone pain, particularly in the back. Note: Most back pain is caused by muscle strain or other conditions such as arthritis, not by osteoporosis.
