TreatmentMedicationsThere is no cure for osteoporosis. However, a number of prescription medications are now available to treat or help prevent this disease. Most of these medications work by decreasing the rate of bone loss (resorption), thereby improving overall bone density. Currently, prescription medications approved by the FDA for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis include estrogen and estrogen-like drugs, bisphosphonates such as Actonel and Fosamax, and the hormone calcitonin (Miacalcin). These medications reduce osteoclast activity so there is less resorption during the bone remodeling process. All but calcitonin are also approved for prevention of the disease.
