Antidepressants: SSRIs and Others
Antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely used today. These medications are named for their ability to block reuptake of a specific neurotransmitter called serotonin, believed to be a critical factor in the development of depression. Other antidepressants treat depression by different mechanisms including blocking reuptake of norepinephrine -- another neurotransmitter believed to play a role in depression.
