Who's at risk?Lessening Risk: Breast Exams and MammogramsThere is another type of risk in breast cancer: finding the disease late, when it's more serious and more difficult to treat. Women should perform a breast self-exam every month and have a doctor's breast examination at least once a year. In general, most women should start having regular mammograms around age 40 to 50, depending on their doctor's recommendation. Women who have a high risk of breast cancer may need to start mammography earlier.
