What is Breast Cancer?SymptomsWomen with breast cancer usually do not have any symptoms, although -- rarely -- there may be bleeding from the nipple or dimpling (indentation, or pulling-in) of the skin or nipple. Instead, most breast cancers are detected by a woman finding a painless lump in her breast. When this happens, she should immediately make an appointment with her doctor to find out if the lump is benign or cancerous. Breast X-ray, or mammogram, is especially important because it can find breast cancer before it can be felt by an exam. The number of breast cancers detected by mammogram has been increasing recently.
