Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy, usually Nolvadex (tamoxifen), is most often used in women with breast cancer that has spread or recurred. Many breast tumors grow in response to the female hormone estrogen. Nolvadex blocks the effects of estrogen on the tumor and thus prevents the hormone from causing further growth of the tumor anywhere in the body. The effectiveness of Nolvadex will depend on the woman's age (women who have passed through menopause usually do better) and the type and extent of the breast tumor. Women usually tolerate Nolvadex without any significant side effects: The most common problem is hot flashes. Women taking Nolvadex do have an increased risk of cancer of the uterus, however.
