Lumpectomy
An increasingly common procedure in women with early breast cancer, called a "lumpectomy," leaves most breast tissue in place, preserving the appearance of the breast. It is usually done in women with breast tumors less than 5 cm and with minimal or no spread of cancer to the lymph nodes. In lumpectomy, the breast tumor ("lump") is completely removed along with some of the lymph nodes under the arm. With early breast cancer, doctors try to leave some lymph nodes in place; this helps prevent the swelling in the arm that may occur when all are removed. A lumpectomy is usually followed by radiation of the breast to kill any remaining cancer cells.
