Stages

Treatment for breast cancer depends on how extensive the cancer is when it is diagnosed. Early disease is a small tumor located in the breast with no evidence of spread beyond this point. At the next level, the cancer has spread to lymph nodes either in the breast area or the underarm. At later stages, when the cancer has spread to other sites in the body such as the bone, lungs, or liver, it is referred to as metastatic. (Note: In discussing breast cancer treatment with their patients, doctors may refer to any of four different cancer stages -- a more formal disease classification that aids in specific treatment selection).
