Award-Winning HIP Provides Brooklyn Residents With Unique Health Care Choice

New York, N.Y. -- HIP Health Plan of New York, one of the most technologically advanced companies in the nation and the largest HMO in the New York metropolitan area, has provided residents of Brooklyn with access to a wide range of health care since 1947.

In its annual listing of the nation’s most innovative corporate users of information technology, Information Week recently listed HIP among the top 500. HIP gained the No.1 HMO ranking in Crain’s annual survey.

Brooklyn residents who are members of HIP have a unique choice that other HMOs do not offer. Residents can obtain their health care down the block, around the corner, even on the street where they live, from neighborhood doctors who work out of their own office. The other choice Brooklyn members have is to obtain their health care at convenient, up-to-date medical centers staffed by doctors in the Central Brooklyn Medical Group and Kingsboro Medical Group.

"We have expanded HIP’s delivery system to provide our members with what they told us they wanted, more choice," said Anthony L. Watson, Chairman and CEO. "Now, HIP is the only company in Brooklyn and all of the New York metropolitan area that provides access to health care by independent doctors working out of their own offices, or at modern, state-of-the-art medical facilities. It is a clear demonstration of our fundamental belief that member satisfaction is HIP’s first priority."

To ensure that its medical delivery system in Brooklyn remains strong, stable, and large enough to serve members far into the future, HIP recently changed the way it arranges member access to health care in the borough. It was accomplished by successfully encouraging the integration of two medical groups, the Brooklyn Medical Group (BMG) and the Central Brooklyn Medical Group (CBMG). With the exception of five physicians, all BMG physicians have joined the CBMG.

At the same time, HIP has announced the closing of the Pierrepont Medical Center at 153 Pierrepont Street, effective this past January 31. It will be replaced later this year with a newly renovated, $5-million medical center at a nearby location.

During renovation of the new center at 200 Montague Street, member health care will be administered as follows:

  • Adult medicine at the Pierrepont Annex
  • Pediatrics at the Downtown Center
  • Specialist services at the Empire Center

Medical Centers now operated by the Central Brooklyn Medical Group consist of:

Pierrepont Annex at 195 Montague Street
Pierrepont Replacement Center at 200 Montague Street (opening June 2001)
Empire at 546 Eastern parkway
Downtown at 345 Schemerhorn Street
Parkway at 1235 Linden Boulevard
Lindenwood at 2832 Linden Boulevard
Bedford-Williamsburg at 233 Nostrand Avenue.

The medical centers operated by the Kingsboro Medical Group consist of:

Kings Highway at 3245 Nostrand Avenue

Coney Island at 1230 Neptune Avenue
Bay Ridge at 6300 8th Avenue
