Patient Safety
Medication Safety
The medication your doctor has prescribed for you plays an important part in keeping you healthy. HIP has a patient safety program and has taken steps to insure your well being. HIP works with our participating pharmacies by utilizing an online system that alerts the pharmacist at the time of filling the prescription if the drug interacts with a medication you are already taking. Pharmacists are then prompted to contact the physician who prescribed the medication for an alternative medication or patient counseling. Along with your doctor and pharmacist, you play an important role in the prevention of medication errors.
As part of HIP's ongoing patient safety program, below is a list of safety tips to consider when you have been prescribed a medication:- Keep a written list of all medications and the dosage you take.
- Carry your medication list with you at all times.
- Review your medications with your doctor at each visit.
- Read prescription labels carefully and always follow the directions provided.
- If you have questions about your prescription including side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist. You may also find information on your medication by visiting Pharmacy Services
- Be sure to inform your doctor and pharmacist if you experience any problems with your medication. Make sure to contact your doctor if you stop taking your medication for any reason.
- Be sure to fill all your prescriptions at the same pharmacy. This will allow the pharmacy to review your medication record for potential drug interactions. If you use mail order pharmacies as well, be sure that each pharmacy is aware of the medication you are taking.
- Do not take outdated medication.
- Do not take another person's prescription drug.
