Club Drugs

Important Facts

  • The most common club drugs include MDMA ("ecstasy"), Methamphetamine ("meth"), Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), and Ketamine ("Special K").
  • Club drugs are illegal, and are often produced in makeshift laboratories. As a result, it is impossible to know exactly what chemicals are used to produce them, where they come from, and therefore how strong or dangerous they are.
  • Teens and young adults who are part of the nightclub, bar, rave and trance scenes may be more likely to use club drugs.
  • Most club drugs are odorless and tasteless.
  • Club drugs can be addictive.
  • Common effects of club drugs include:
    • Blurred vision
    • Impaired senses, memory and judgment
    • Loss of muscle and motor control, reduced coordination
    • Seizures
  • High doses of club drugs can cause:
    • Coma
    • Death
    • Increase in body temperature
    • Kidney and cardiovascular system failure
    • Muscle breakdown
    • Severe breathing problems
  • Some effects of club drugs may occur even weeks after taking them (e.g., confusion, depression, anxiety, paranoia or difficulty sleeping).
  • Using club drugs, while dancing for extended periods of time, under hot and/or crowded conditions, can lead to extreme dehydration and heart or kidney failure.
  • Mixing various club drugs or taking them with alcohol is extremely dangerous and can be deadly.
  • Regular use of club drugs may result in permanent damage to the brain’s ability to think and store memories.
  • No club drug is harmless.

"Special K" (Ketamine)

  • Special K is both a depressant and stimulant. It depresses the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) but increases heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Special K may also produce loss of consciousness, dream-like states and/or hallucinations.
  • Special K can lead to heart or kidney failure.
  • Use of even a small amount of Special K can reduce:
    • Attention span
    • Learning ability
    • Memory
  • At higher doses, Special K can cause:
    • Amnesia
    • Delirium
    • Depression
    • High blood pressure
    • Severe breathing problems

    LSD (Acid)

    • LSD affects the brain; distorting the way our senses work and changing perceptions of time and space.
    • LSD causes hallucinations (imagined experiences that seem real).
    • Some hallucinations may be associated with powerful negative experiences, referred to as “bad trips.” These may involve an overwhelming sense of fear, perhaps of being abandoned, going insane or dying.
    • LSD may cause unpredictable behavior.
    • Users of LSD may experience:
      • Difficulty concentrating and/or communicating
      • "Flashbacks"
      • Inability to distinguish between reality and illusion
