What is the New Member ID/NMI?
NMI, or New Member ID, will be issued to all HIP non-Medicaid* members. It is an eight-digit, unique number. This means that a dependent will no longer have an ID number that is a variation of the policy holder's Social Security number. Instead, each HIP member will have his or her own ID number.
When will I receive my NMI?
Since New Member IDs will be issued to members in phases, see the chart below to learn when to expect your NMI.
| If You Enrolled With HIP As A… | You Will Receive Your NMI… |
| Group Account Member | When your group renews, beginning April 2005 through March 2006 |
| HIP VIP® Premier Medicare Plan (Medicare Group Account) Member | When your group renews, beginning April 2005 through March 2006 |
| Group Account COBRA Member | When your group renews, beginning April 2005 through March 2006 |

* Medicaid and Family Health Plus members may continue to use their current ID
numbers (CIN numbers), since new member IDs will not be assigned to them.
What should I do when I get my NMI?
When you receive your new ID card reflecting your NMI, simply begin using it to access care or make customer service inquiries. Upon receipt of your new card, it is important to destroy your old member ID card to further safeguard the privacy of your protected health information.
What if I forget my NMI?
To avoid any disruption of service, HIP departments and systems will continue to accept the current 11-digit ID in addition to the eight-digit NMI. Therefore, members who have not received their NMI or have forgotten their NMI may still receive care using the 11-digit member ID number.
Where can I learn more about NMI?
Look for more details about NMI on hipusa.com, in future issues of the member newsletter, HIP Today, and in the packet containing your new ID card.
