Dear Parents:
Did you know that your child's oral health begins at birth and with you?
For children, the chance for a healthy smile or the possibility of tooth decay begins with their parents. For very young children, parents must understand that their role is essential in preventing tooth decay and gingivitis (gum disease).
The first step in your baby's oral health is mouth cleaning. Start right at birth.
Second, if your baby sleeps with a bottle, be sure the bottle contains only water. Placing a baby to bed with a bottle of milk, formula or juice can cause baby bottle tooth decay. This rapid and serious form of decay occurs when the child's teeth are bathed with sweet liquids for long periods.
Third, parents must know that if they have tooth decay and bleeding gums, the germs that can cause these mouth problems will be passed in their saliva to their children (by sharing spoons, drinking from the same glass, etc.).
Good mouth care is an investment in your baby's health and future.
