HIP recognizes that many members have not had comprehensive dental coverage beyond diagnostic and preventive services. Financial reasons have kept many from seeking and receiving dental care. That's why HIP now offers an expanded dental program through an agreement with Careington International Corporation, a leading national dental provider network. This dental program provides members with access to a new, larger dental network and enhanced dental benefits at discounted rates.
This coverage provides access to the following general dental services from participating dentists:
- One examination (comprehensive or periodic) every six months - $5 per visit. +
- One prophylaxis (cleaning) every six months - $10 per visit. ++
- One topical application of fluoride (for children age 16 and under) every six months - $5 per visit.
Additional services, including but not limited to x-rays, fillings, crowns or dentures, will be provided at a discounted rate subject to a fee schedule which may change from time to time. There are several schedules of services based on the geographic location of the provider's office. Therefore, members will pay different fees based on the location (region) of the dentist's office.
Specialist dental services, such as endodontic, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic, pediatric, periodontic, and prosthodontic procedures are also available from participating dentists. Charges for specialist services are discounted by 20 percent off the dentist's usual and customary rates. No schedule of services applies to specialist dental services.
Both general and specialist dental services may be self-referred, referred by a participating dentist or arranged through Careington International. Members may select any participating HIP Dentist and may change their choice of provider at any time. Members must use participating dentists for all care under this benefit to take advantage of the discounted rates.

Important Notes
This benefit does not apply to Child Health Plus members, Medicaid members. HIP/HMO Direct subscribers, HIP/CHOICE Plus Direct subscribers or Healthy New York members.
It applies only to: (1) those members enrolled through a group or an organization, such as an employer, labor union, association or welfare fund, that acts as a remitting agent and sends HIP the premium for the member's coverage; (2) those subscribers enrolled through a HIP/HMO direct payment contract effective prior to 01/01/96; and (3) most Medicare members.
These pages describe HIP's basic preventive dental plan for all group members. Members enrolled in the HIP Prime Dental plan have additional benefits. They have received special information detailing their coverage.
For members who have additional dental benefits beyond HIP's basic preventive dental plan, Medicaid, and Child Health Plus. These members are enrolled in the HIP Prime Dental plan, High Option plan, or the Low Option plan. A dental claim form should be submitted for dental expenses. Please read the instructions listed on the form carefully.
Through HIP's Agreement with Careington International Corporation, this program provides HIP members with discounts on services provided by Careington.
+ Participating dentists may recommend that members receive additional services and procedures consistent with generally accepted dental practices. For example, a recent full mouth series of x-rays is required at the time of examination. Frequency of x-rays depends on the practitioner's judgement of each individual case based upon a multitude of factors.
++ An examination and x-rays are required prior to a cleaning.
