HIP has specific criteria for a hospital to be designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence and monitors its performance and its bariatric practitioners on an annual basis. Following are the key elements of the criteria required for a hospital to be credentialed by HIP as a Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery:
- The hospital must be JCAHO-accredited without significant deficiencies or a CMS-approved bariatric facility.
- The hospital must have a team that is experienced and committed to treating bariatric patients.
- The hospital must have specially-equipped operating and recovery rooms and appropriate bariatric instruments and equipment.
- The hospital must provide long term follow-up care including rehabilitation, psychiatric care, nutritional counseling and support groups.
- Experience has shown that the more procedures a hospital and physician have completed the better the clinical outcomes for their patients. For this reason, HIP requires that each hospital have a minimum of 125 bariatric surgeries performed yearly. Additionally, all bariatric surgeons at the hospital must perform a minimum of 50 bariatric surgeries per year.
- Bariatric surgeons at the hospital must have completed specific educational and certification/board eligibility requirements and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of bariatric surgery.
If you are interested in obtaining more information on bariatric surgery, please contact any of the HIP-credentialed Centers of Excellence listed above.
