What is asthma?
Asthma is a disease that causes the air passages in your lungs to become inflamed and swollen. Allergic reactions to pollen, dust, mold, pets and even certain foods can trigger asthma attacks. It's important to be aware of your environment and avoid these asthma triggers.

Asthma:
- Is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways.
- Affects 14-15 million people in the United States.
- Is the most common chronic disease of childhood, affecting about 4.8 million children.
- Causes death in more than 5,000 people annually.
What You Can Do?
HIP is committed to improving the quality of life of all its members, including the asthmatic member. If your PCP feels that you can benefit from being part of an asthma program, your doctor will refer you to HIP's asthma program. There are various informational materials and tools to assist you and your PCP in taking control of your condition.
- If you think you or your child has symptoms of asthma, such as recurrent episodes of coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, contact your PCP.
- Ask your PCP to complete an Asthma Management Plan with you. Print a copy of this plan and take it with you on your next visit. The Asthma Management Plan helps control symptoms early, avoiding unpleasant complications.
- There are environmental triggers which can make your condition worse. Take action to avoid these triggers. Here's a checklist of potential triggers. Print out a copy to keep it handy.
- Quit smoking! Smoking can make your asthma worse. And exposing your children to cigarette smoke can make their asthma worse. HIP's Smoking Cessation program gives you all the information and tools you need to help you quit.
